Well, I got to Nome at 9am...took a taxi to Myra's only to find that Bob wasn't there. So, I dropped off my two small bags and Myra and I took the "buggy" down to the dog lot. I found the dogs, but no Bob. While walking around the dog lot, I borrowed 11 crates that weren't being used. We heard that there was a musher sleeping on the stage floor. We went to check it out and sure enough, there was Bob.
He was so surprised to see me. He was beat. His face has pretty badly frost bitten. I took a pic and will post it when I figure out how to get it off the cell phone.
At 3:00 we headed out to the Banquet. What a feed. Prime Rib, shrimp, white fish, an assortment of fruit, and more. It was great seeing everyone. Christine Roaloffs actually made it in in time for the banquet. That was great. It seemed for a while there that there may be a chance that she wasn't going to make it. Her team had been shutting down quite a bit.
I'll have to ask her what it was like to extiguish the widow's lamp. If Bob got the red lantern, we were both going to extinguish the widow's lamp...last year I never got the honor. We have no idea who blew it out. In all of the media reports, it was I who extinguished the lamp. Not so.
Well, now on the agenda is to figure out who we are flying the dogs out with.

So glad you finally made it! Congrats to both you and Bob for such great efforts. Take care and best wishes for a safe journey home. - Julie
ReplyDeleteCongrats ... soon you'll both be going home from nome :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to experience the banquet ... frostbite healing to Bob and peaceful rest to the dogs and mushers. debi
Jan, I looked for you on the Insider video when Bob finished in Nome. I figured there had to be a good reason why you weren't there...and now I see there was. I am glad you got to go to the banquet.
ReplyDeleteI read on one of your comments that you are not planning to run next year. I was sure hoping you would. I know it is expensive. Maybe your friends and family can put up one of those fundraising things online and we can help you out. One of the mushers had fans from a book club that organized online auctions.
You write so beautifully. I can imagine that you are also a wonderful public speaker. I sure hope that your adventures continue. You did something I can only read about. I would love to have dogs pull me down the trail...
Jan, take care. I will be checking your blog often as you continue to "live your dream".
Blessings...
Well, at lunch at the Polar Cup, I was talking to Bob about me running again next year. I have had so many ask if I will run again and I have friends who want to be in Anchorage in 2014...I am considering it, but I would have to have financial sponsorship. I can not going any further in debt. Let me know if you have any ideas for fund raising and/or if you are willing to help!
